1. Keep the soil off. Use entryway mats, and sweep or vacuum the outside sidewalk leading to the door.

2. Vacuum regularly. No step is more important to preserving carpet appearance. Vacuum heavy-traffic areas twice weekly; other areas, once a week. Select a vacuum that has been approved by the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI).

3. Remove spots before they become stains. Most liquid spills can be removed completely with absorbent cloths and a little water. All liquids should be blotted with downward pressure and never, ever rubbed. Consult the Stain Removal Wizard developed by the IICRC and The Housekeeping Channel. Professional carpet cleaners who are trained and certified have the know-how to remove stains that could otherwise become permanent.

4. Call a professional. Regular cleaning by cleantrust-certified professionals is required by a number of carpet manufacturers' warranties and will protect your investment by extending the useful life of the carpet. Professionals have also invested in more-powerful tools - for example, truck-mounted equipment - that remove more soil. Locate a certified firm at www.CertifiedCleaners.org or call 800-835-4624.
