Bronze

A cousin of brass, this alloy is more resistant to pitting and corrosion. Bronze can also be lacquered to preserve its shine. Wash lacquered bronze with a mild soap solution, using a soft cloth. Don't use abrasive pads or cleansers, which will scratch lacquered finishes. The bronze will then tarnish in streaks where the lacquer has been worn off.

Like brass, unlacquered bronze may be cleaned with metal polish to restore its original luster. If the bronze object is an antique, however, consult a professional before cleaning off tarnish. In doing so, you might just wipe away its historical significance. Most qualified conservators are able to evaluate such pieces, and some will clean them for you in the proper way.
