A comforter is a covering used most commonly to decorate - and further insulate - a bed. Most inexpensive comforters are filled with synthetic materials such as polyester to add body, texture, and modest insulation value.
Many down comforters and others filled with natural materials are machine washable, but not in the washers and dryers found in most homes. Their small size will compress and distort the down filler. Down comforters may be cleaned either professionally or in super-sized laundromat washers and dryers. The large capacity commercial drums found in these machines will help retain the down’s fluffy texture. As with synthetic comforters, use cool or warm water and a gentle wash cycle, followed by low dryer heat.
Use a duvet cover to protect your down comforter from dust and dirt, and to help reduce the frequency of washing the down comforter. Duvet covers, like bed sheets, are easily washed at home.
