Audio/video components

The magnetic fields around stereo receivers, CD players, speakers and video monitors attract dust, so that frequent dusting is necessary. If possible, place components inside a cabinet with a door — and keep the door closed — to cut down on dust accumulation.

To reduce dust inside components, keep panel doors and trays closed on CD/DVD players, cassette recorders and similar equipment when not in use. CDs, DVDs and cassettes should be removed and stored in their own cases after viewing or playing.

Fingerprints and other grime may be removed from plastic or metal equipment cabinets with household cleaner or a solution of pure rubbing alcohol and water applied to a cloth. Buff the surface dry with a clean, soft cloth. The screens of LCD, flat-panel video monitors are the exception to this rule — don’t use anything stronger than a solution of mild soap and water to clean these panels, since stronger alkalies can damage their soft plastic surfaces. It's best to consult the owner's manual for tips on care and cleaning. The glass screens of CRT monitors generally don’t require this precaution.

Caution: Never spray or pour cleaning solution directly onto any electronic component. Doing so increases shock hazards and can easily destroy the equipment.
