The automatic icemaker in your freezer doesn’t require cleaning in normal use. However, ice itself absorbs food odors from both compartments because most refrigerators use a common fan and air-circulation system. To help keep the ice fresh, clean both freezer and refrigerator at least twice a year. Place an opened box of baking soda in each compartment between cleanings.
According to the International Executive Housekeepers Association (IEHA), "regularly send dishwasher-safe ice paraphernalia through a heated, sanitizing dish cycle."
Misshapen ice is old ice, so it’s very likely to taste funny, too. If you have a food-waste disposer in your sink, grind up old cubes under running water to help flush out grease.
