Key to a Clean Carpet: Use a CRI-Certified Vacuum

There is one simple step to improving the cleanliness of your carpet and the indoor air quality in your home: regular vacuuming with a Carpet and Rug Institute- or CRI-certified machine.

A CRI-certified vacuum effectively sucks up the dust from the carpet, locks it in the machine and keeps it out of the air. Vacuums that effectively remove and contain soil help carpets last longer and keep them looking attractive, while capturing allergens and other particles.

Vacuum Cleaners Get Tested

Forward-thinking vacuum cleaner companies have voluntarily had their equipment tested via the not-for-profit CRI Seal of Approval (SOA) program, and those vacuums that pass rigorous testing have been awarded either a Green Label or the even more advanced Gold, Silver or Bronze SOA designation for effective soil removal, indoor air quality protection, and minimal carpet wear. These include vacuum cleaner models from companies such as Oreck, Tacony, Hoover, ProTeam and many others.

Companies with CRI-vetted vacuum cleaners for homes can also volunteer for a review by The Housekeeping Channel (HC). The following companies have participated in the HC Review Program to date:

When using any vacuum cleaner be sure to vacuum slowly and to make several passes over each area of carpet, to clean or change filters regularly, and to keep belts, brushes and cords in good repair.
