Advisory Board Bio

Nelson E. Fabian

Nelson E. Fabian is the Executive Director and CEO of the 72 year old National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), the professional society for environmental health practitioners. Following a nationwide search, he was appointed to this position in 1983 by the association's board of directors. He is the longest tenured executive director in NEHA’s history.


In 2007, he was named by the Journal of Environmental Health as one of the nation’s 15 leaders in environmental health. He is also the recipient of several awards including the prestigious Walter Snyder Award given once a year by NSF in recognition of a professional person who excels at building consensus agreements on environmental issues across a wide range of different stakeholders.

Nelson has his B.S. degree in (Systems) Engineering from Oakland University and his M.S. in Management Engineering from Wayne State University. He also has additional coursework in philosophy/religious studies from the University of Windsor in Windsor Ontario, Canada.

Nelson has served on numerous boards throughout his career and has been the chair of the National Health and Energy Alliance, the Rocky Mountain Leadership Institute for Health and the Environment and the International Aquatics Foundation. He currently sits on NEHA’s Board and Advisory Boards for the Convention and Visitors Bureaus for the cities of Spokane and Tucson, the Environmental and Public Health Council for Underwriters Laboratories and the Colorado Interagency Committee for Pandemic Flu and Terrorism Preparedness. He is also an expert advisor to General Alexander Haig’s World Business Review television program.

He has also served in numerous advisory capacities for business schools and universities, CDC, FDA and many other associations.

Nelson has held elective office as he was once the Mayor Pro Temps for the city of Berkley, Michigan.

He authors a regular column in the Journal of Environmental Health and he is a contributing columnist for Association Management - the official journal for the American Society of Association Executives. He has given many keynote presentations, contributed articles to various publications, lead panel and focus group discussions, lectured at various colleges and universities across the country and been involved in the design and launch of a new international company (NEHA Training LLC) that targets the subject of food safety education and training.

Nelson has also given many presentations around the nation and to a wide variety of different professional organizations on the topic of pandemic flu. He has published on this topic and has authored several online courses on it.

Nelson has led the National Environmental Health Association over a time when the association has significantly increased its staff, budget and product/service line. Prior to joining NEHA, Nelson was the Manager for the Department of Environmental Standards and Regulations for the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association, the Director for Environmental Health at the Comprehensive Health Planning Council of Southeast Michigan, and a Project Coordinator at the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments.

Nelson currently resides in the Denver Colorado area - which is where NEHA is nationally headquartered.
