Vacuum cleaner soil removal

The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) uses scientific methods such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to determine the amount of soil vacuum cleaners remove from carpets. According to CRI, the best vacuums - those receiving CRI's Seal of Approval (SOA) - remove between 40 to 55 percent or so of soil.

This highlights the need for periodic extraction or deep cleaning of carpets (aka, "steam cleaning") to remove embedded soil, reduce carpet wear, protect carpet appearance, and help ensure a healthier indoor environment.

The CRI Seal of Approval (SOA) Program awards vacuum cleaners Bronze, Silver or Gold recognition based on these soil removal levels:

  • Bronze 40-49% soil removal
  • Silver 50-54% soil removal
  • Gold ≥55% soil removal
