Always store videotapes in cardboard jackets or plastic storage cases when not in use. Dust on cassettes will be transferred to the inside of your VCR, where it can cause a host of problems with the video heads and electronic components.
Clean dust from cassettes using a microfiber dusting cloth. Don't spray liquid cleaners onto a videotape. It shouldn't be necessary, especially since liquids can damage a VCR in a hurry. To remove a smudge, dampen a soft cloth with clean water and dab it on the spot. Be sure to dry the spot completely before inserting the tape into a VCR.
Video cassettes used for repeated tapings should be discarded and replaced with a new cassette after roughly 200 viewings. At this age, videotape has lost much of the coating that helps protect the video head from wear.
