Acrylic is a plastic polymer used in bathroom fixtures such as shower enclosures, bathtubs, and tub surrounds. Some bathroom and kitchen sink models also are made of acrylic. Many contractors who specialize in refinishing or relining tubs and shower stalls choose acrylic for the new finish. Acrylic can be made virtually any color.
Glossy acrylic surfaces are durable, but scratch easily, just like many other plastics. Avoid using abrasive cleaning pads or cleansers of any kind, since the resulting scratches will dull the finish and can make future cleaning more difficult. Don’t use solvents or cleaning products containing acetone, liquid bleach, ethyl alcohol, toluene, or phenol on acrylics. Use aerosol products cautiously near an acrylic surface, since many aerosols use alcohol as a propellant. If a solvent does contact an acrylic surface, flush it with plenty of clean water and then wipe dry.
Extreme heat will discolor or scorch acrylics permanently. Avoid placing appliances such as hot hair dryers or portable heaters on the surface for any length of time, and never allow a lit cigarette to rest on an acrylic surface.
