[The following instructions are specific to steam radiators. Please see the entry Radiator heating system for identification information.]
To avoid being burned, wait until the radiator is cool before starting any task. Use a duster on and in between an upright radiator’s fins any time it’s cool or cold, and then vacuum the same areas and adjacent floor and walls (if possible) with a brush attachment.
To clean grime and stuck-on dust from exterior fins, shut down the boiler and wait until the radiator is cold before starting. Place towels or drop cloths under and around the radiator to catch drips. Spray the fins with any mild, all-purpose household cleaner, and let the cleaner work for a while (or re-apply it) to loosen stubborn soil or spots. Wipe the metal with a water-dampened cloth, wringing out soil and cleaner as necessary. Dry with a soft cloth or towel.
Don’t use abrasive pads or scouring cleansers, which can scratch or remove paint from the metal. Instead, leave the cleaning solution on spots or stains for several minutes, then scrub with a cloth or sponge.
