First, verify that there’s ink in both cartridges. Virtually all computer printers have a cleaning cycle that is the first step in maintenance. In some models, the cycle can be run several times, providing a stronger cleaning with each cycle.

If print quality is still poor after running these cycles, you may be able to clean the printing head by hand with a cotton swab dipped in water or plain rubbing alcohol (avoid products with moisturizers or perfumes). But first, check for manual cleaning tips in the instructions that came with the printer, or search the manufacturer’s Web site for recommendations, since some printer makers recommend against using any alcohol on print heads.

Keep the printer closed when it's not in use to keep dust from collecting on the mechanical components inside. Like many electrical appliances, printers are typically housed in high-impact plastic that may be cleaned with denatured alcohol (equal parts rubbing alcohol and water). Stubborn grime may be treated with rubbing alcohol applied from a cotton swab or paper towel.

Caution: Always unplug the printer before cleaning any part of it, and never spray or pour any liquid inside the printer or any electrical appliance.
