Folks who make their own ice in removable trays should rinse them after each use before refilling. All can occasionally be washed by hand in dishwashing liquid, and many trays can be safely cleaned in the top rack of the dishwasher.

Misshapen ice is old ice, so it’s very likely to taste funny, too. If you have a food-waste disposer in your sink, grind up old cubes under running water to help flush grease out of the disposer and the drains, and sharpen the disposer’s blades.
