What to do with the rest of winter

By HC Staff

No matter what the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil has to say, spring can’t come fast enough for many of us in the Northern Hemisphere. But with a little imagination and some forward-thinking, we can make good use of the time until then and stave off those winter blahs. Here are few ideas:

Plan your spring garden

While it may be too early to plant, it’s never too early to plan. Browse gardening books and articles here at HousekeepingChannel.com for fresh ideas and helpful tips. Organic Gardening Techniques and Philosophy, by Fran Sorin, is a great place to start.

You can also use this time to read up on composting. The editors of the National Gardening Association put together a step-by-step guide to composting. See Composting for Dummies to find out more about it.

Rearrange your furniture

Even small changes can give your mood a big boost. Swap out a table lamp, move your bed to a different wall, or bring in a vase of fresh flowers to liven up your space. You don’t have to do a complete overhaul, although that could be fun too. (Tip: Furniture sliders really work to move heavy pieces.)

Get started on spring cleaning

Some chores really don’t need to wait until warmer weather. For example, if you have a self-cleaning oven, you know running it can really heat up the house. Take advantage of chilly outdoor temperatures now and you’ll have one less task to complete in the spring.

Let someone else clean your house for a change

If you’re thinking about hiring a cleaning service but you’re not sure which one to choose, take a look at the article Helpful Tips for Choosing a Trustworthy Home Cleaning Service.
