Seasonal Storage

By HC Staff

Before you store your out-of-season clothing, here are some tips to keep in mind.

In the article What’s In Storage?, Tara Aronson suggests making a map or visual diagram of where everything is stored so you can find it again.

In my heart, I would love to be the kind of person who makes neat, legible labels as I put everything away for the year … and sometimes I do that. But just in case life gets crazy and I get distracted from my organizational goals, I’ve got a backup plan: clear storage boxes.

See-through storage containers are readily available and generally cost the same as traditional plastic bins. Another trick is to use color-coded containers for seasonal decorations and other items to differentiate them from clothing storage.

Lea Schneider offers some practical advice on organizing your closet for a new season in Change of Season Signals Change in Closet. One smart tip is to make sure all clothes are free of stains before they go into storage, otherwise the stains may become too set-in to remove.

Best of all, her plan includes shopping for new clothes! She suggests that as you pull this season’s clothing out of storage, match tops and bottoms to make outfits. While you are doing this, write down items you need to buy. Do you have shoes for each outfit? Do you need more tops to go with a particular skirt?

Finally, grab your list, find a sale, and go shopping! You’ll have an organized closet to bring your new items home to.
