What do you intend to clean this spring?

By HC Staff

It’s spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and the mild temperatures and fresh breezes inspire and rejuvenate us. The downside? All that extra sunlight from the longer daylight hours also seems to call attention to the winter detritus.

It’s been suggested that spring cleaning originated as an answer to the winter’s accumulation of grime and soot from the house being closed up and the fire going inside. However, as a culture we continue the tradition; every year the windows and doors fly open and we turn the radio up, don yellow gloves, and dig into the dirt and clutter we’ve accumulated.

It’s true that today’s homes may not require the elbow grease of yesteryear to get the job done. On the other hand, our modern lifestyles have produced a different problem: we accumulate stuff.

And it’s not just our closets, storage rooms, and garages where the clutter accumulates. It’s also our phones (old numbers and voicemail messages), our email inboxes, our computer hard drives, our accounts and passwords. Technology has added another layer to our list of things to clean up.

Then there’s the dog, who needs a good grooming, the half-dead plants that need repotting, the tool shed that needs retooling. The list of things we could do to capitalize on the motivation of spring could go on and on…

What do you intend to clean - or work on - this spring?

  • Clutter
  • Negativity
  • Bookshelves
  • The Garage
  • Finances
  • Closets
  • Walls, Windows, Carpets, Baseboards, Pillows and Mattresses, Curtains, Drapes, or Blinds, Ceilings, Kitchen Cupboards, Oven and Stove, Refrigerator, Furniture…

In the following weeks, we’ll post some helpful articles from The Housekeeping Channel to help get you started, keep you going, and make the process a whole lot easier. We’re also going to post some reasons why you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to.
