Rating Disclaimer
Reviewing products, like reviewing movies or restaurants, is arguably a subjective process (even for well-funded consumer groups) based on the review criteria (what the reviewer considers important) and the unique perspective of the reviewer. Thus, when considering The Housekeeping Channel's reviews, please do not use the numerical product ratings (e.g., "9.5 out of 10") for direct product comparison purposes since these represent the unique 'take' of each reviewer, and will often vary qualitatively and quantitatively from product to product.
Do rely on the text of the reviews for issues to consider when purchasing similar products, and do consider the scientific data supplied (for example, information from the Carpet and Rug Institute's Seal of Approval-related research) that will help you in your decision making process. We believe the "truth" about products can only be discovered by weighing, then averaging, a number of factors and credible viewpoints based on available resources and science, then making buying decisions based on what is important to you.

Ultra Extraction Carpet Shampoo is a five-in-one cleaner promising to be a stain remover, degreaser, deodorizer, defoamer and stain repellant. We used it in a rental machine as well as a residential-model carpet-cleaning machine, and compared the results with a major-brand steam cleaner with stain repellant.
All comparisons were done in three homes and on the same carpets, all of average-length pile. Quality Cleaning Maid to Order divided the rooms, using one product on each side of each room.

Generally speaking, both products gave satisfactory cleaning results – all visible soils appeared to be removed. Although we did not encounter any specific stains, we did use both products on heavy traffic areas, as well as in a home that had multiple (shedding) animals that spent equal
time indoors and outdoors.
Overall I did find the Stain-X brand to be a better value for the following reasons:
- The dilution ratio was only one ounce to each gallon of water, whereas the alternate brand required two to four ounces per gallon.
- The Stain-X brand requires no additional purchase of defoamer while the other major brand does – if the carpets have been previously cleaned with shampoo, or even if any spray foam cleaners have been used between cleanings.
- Unlike the alternate product, Stain-X left no residual pet or chemical odor while drying.
