BOOK REVIEW: Dirt - The Quirks, Habits, and Passions of Keeping House, Edited by Mindy Lewis

By HC Staff

Lifestyle and cleaning are tightly intertwined in this unique book. The book Dirt bases its theme on the simple fact that everyone has their own experiences and way of cleaning. Consisting of 38 essays from a variety of authors, the book keeps your attention with each author's own take on cleaning. It is a deep examination of what prompts us to clean and what causes us not to, and explores the connection between housework and our relationships with others.

The book also examines our own inner selves in relation to housekeeping. One touching essay was an abridged diary of an author's mother, a schizophrenic who became homeless at age sixty-four. Yet, no matter where she roamed without a home, she always took pride in cleaning each of her temporary residences. Other essays tell just as thoughtful stories.

The book Dirt, while not plot driven, is organized by the subject matter into six sections of authors' stories – from “Family Dirt” to “A Clean New World.” Don't expect to find many cleaning tips, but you may learn something about yourself or find something in common with the reflections of the select authors. Perhaps you too had a stereotypical mother who was always cleaning or a sloppy family member who could never keep anything clean. Maybe cleaning is an obsessive routine for you or the opposite, a chore that is only done when absolutely necessary. Whatever your take, looking at others' viewpoints, may just have you reflecting on your own housekeeping.

Editor Mindy Lewis has put a creative collection of stories from authors with a wide variety of backgrounds into one enjoyable-to-read book, Dirt. It covers — just as it asserts — “the quirks, habits, and passions of keeping house.”
