Dorm Notes

Your oldest, your firstborn (YOUR BABY!) is going off to college this year. She's cool, calm and collected. You're a nervous wreck.

article continues below ↓

How will she survive without Mom monitoring every minute? Cooking every meal? Laundering every halter-top? You have visions of her lying in a cold cinderblock dorm room on a narrow lumpy twin bed. Staying up late. Sleeping through her first class. Being hungry!!

Chill, Mom. You'll make it. But if it makes you feel better, soothe your frazzled nerves by making sure she at least goes away prepared. After that — well, you've done your best.

First, help her make a list of what she will need. (The kid has never set up house before — so what does she know?) Then find out what school provides. Then encourage her to call her roommate to avoid duplication.

Space will be at a premium. She should not pack every rag she has. Just clothes appropriate for that particular season. Unless she's attending the University of Outer Mongolia, supplies will also be available there.

To figure out what she'll need, consider the activities that will go on in her dorm room. (Try not to think too hard.)
Nesting
This is her first home away from home, and it will come very sparsely furnished. Make sure she packs:

  • A cheery comforter (Try to coordinate with roommate.)

  • Two sets of sheets (Many dorms are furnished with extra long twins.)

  • Her favorite pillow

  • Curtains

  • Area rug

  • Afghan or throw

  • Study pillow

  • Lamps

  • Trash can

  • Fan

  • Power strips (for all the electronics listed later)

  • Photos of Mom, Dad, Poochie

  • Hangers

  • Shelves and storage containers
Health and Grooming
  • Basic medications (cough syrup, ibuprofen, aspirin — whatever she's sure to need in the middle of the night)

  • Prescription meds

  • Thermometer

  • Towels

  • Shower tote

  • Toiletries

Study (oddly enough, the shortest list)

  • Computer, printer paper, etc.

  • Alarm clock
Eating
Entertainment
  • Camera

  • TV

  • Cordless phone

  • CD player

  • Stereo
Cleaning
  • Broom

  • Mop

  • Dustpan

  • Laundry bag

  • Iron (Oh pack it! Who knows, it might get used.)
